The 3D scanning software process is quite straight forward and organized. For that I use Metashape from Agisoft.
1. I import the all the pictures of one object into the software under a "Chunk". Then I right click on the Chunk and I click on Process -> Align Photo. The computer will start to calculate each pictures' 3D position and then build a sparse point cloud from the intersecting pixels' projections.
2. I can see that the subject of my scan is denser in points than the rest. I can isolate it from a useless background or elements by fine tuning a region box around it. I then right click on Chunk and click on Process -> Build Dense Cloud. It will calculate a denser point cloud within the region box. I usually set the quality on medium. It would be too long if it was set to high and it's precise enough for the next steps.
3. Right click on Chunk again and Process -> Build Mesh. This part of the process connects the vertices together and create faces between those edges.
Below you can see 2 different visualizations: Solid and Shaded.
4. Finally, right click on Chunk, Process -> Build Texture. This will project the original pictures onto the generated faces of the mesh. I choose a size of 8K (8192*8192) to get a good resolution. And it's finally ready to export as an OBJ.
Some more pictures of the process for different objects.
And here you can see my last scans from this week.
